Catt is one of four loosehead props, including 21-year-old Ellis Genge, to be named with Joe Marler still recovering from a fractured leg. Openside James Haskell, lock Maro Itoje, winger Anthony Watson, back row Jack Clifford and winger Jack Nowell all return to the fold for the Six Nations champions after missing the autumn series. The squad will fly to Portugal for a three-day warm-weather training camp on Sunday. Jones declined to confirm that Hartley, the Northampton hooker, will retain the captaincy for the Six Nations Championship but says his match fitness is around “7/10”. Hartley has not played since December 9 when he was suspended for six weeks for striking Sean O’Brien, the Leinster and Ireland flanker.

He’s moving in the right direction, he’s progressed from probably in the autumn when we would have given him a 5/10, in terms of being ready to play, to a 7/10,” Jones said. “So given that he has a good couple of days training in Portugal I anticipate him being in the reckoning for the first Test team.”In spite of his fitness, Hartley seems set to remain captain, in part because of the lack of alternatives. Owen Farrell, Mike Brown and Billy Vunipola have previously performed the role of vice-captains, but Vunipola is injured while Farrell and Brown have not captained their clubs on a regular basis. Asked how many potential captains he has at his disposal, Jones replied: “There's not many. I don't have to consider that at the moment.”

After completing a perfect first year in charge, Jones made clear increasing that pool of leaders will be one of his main priorities for 2017. “100 per cent, that's one of our great keys going forward,” Jones said. “Apart from working on the fundamental skills and increasing the depth of the squad, one thing we need to do is increase the leadership density of the team. That's a big project going forward. It's about developing players France vs England Live RBS leadership skills. What is being a leader? Being a leader means every day you rock up to training, rock up to a meeting, and you get on with the job. You do it to absolutely 100 per cent. And if the guy next to you is not doing it properly, you tell him he's not doing it properly. And you tell him how to do it. When we've got 10 players like that, then we'll be in a position to win the World Cup. We're not there at the moment, but we'll get there.”

Jones also announced that Dr Sherylle Calder will be joining England on a consultancy basis as a visual awareness coach. Calder was part of the backroom staff in both the 2003 England and 2007 South Africa World Cup winning teams and also worked with Jones when he was Japan head coach.A few have gone out and a few have come in so it’s a bit of a rotating door. Maro Itoje has done well for his club as has Jack Nowell.James Haskell had a magnificent 35 seconds for Wasps in his return so hopefully he will get a bit of game time at the weekend. He was magnificent for England last year and is a fierce player.
Anthony Watson has been a great player for England and is one of the most prolific try scorers for the number of Tests he has played so we are looking forward to those guys coming in and challenging for a spot.”
